Our popular
horseback riding
camp is back for
another great summer
of fun!
Whether you are a beginner who wants to learn to ride, or an experienced rider who wants to improve your skills, there is a place for you at Buckingham Valley Summer Riding Camp! We teach Hunt Seat Equitation to our campers, both girls and boys, who range in age from 5-16. Four 2-week sessions are available. From 9am to 3pm, we fill our days with horses, friends and fun!
NEW for 2011 - Each session will have a special riding focus in addition to the regular camp and a bonus activity on the second Tuesday! The themes are:
Session I: Hunter and Pleasure Riding in the Show Ring, plus Pony Salon Day
- Riders will learn the difference between riding in a hunter class vs. a pleasure class at a horse show, and how to succeed at both! For our bonus activity, the kids get to primp and style their ponies. From glam up dos and braids, to mohawks the kids are sure to have a blast!
Session II: Equitation, plus Ice Cream Social & Horse Movie
- Back to basics! Working from the ground up to improve the rider's habits and form. For our bonus activity, campers will party it up while creating their own sundaes, cooling down with a swim, and watching a fun horse themed movie!
Session III: Basic Principles of Dressage to Improve Communication between Horse & Rider, plus Horse Costume Party
- Riders will learn how dressage techniques can improve communication with their horse, as well as improve the hunter seat and rider's position. For our bonus activity, each team will dress their horse or pony in a costume of their group's design (materials will be provided), and then join in the Pony Costume Parade. Laughter is sure to be had!
Session IV: Fitness and Care of the Horse and Rider, plus Buckingham Valley Farm Summer Olympics
- Riders will learn about the importance of their fitness as well as the fitness and care of their horse. We will also have our first Buckingham Valley Farm Summer Olympics! Memories are sure to be made as campers engage in some fun and friendly competition!

Riding and time with the horses is a big part of the day. Campers are split into small riding groups based on their ability and previous riding experience. Our goal is to build each rider’s skills and confidence enabling them to ride safely and correctly. The small group environment allows our instructors to offer individualized attention and develop riders at their own pace. While beginner riders may be aided with a leader (if they need one), our advanced riders use a variety of tools including video tape to critique their progress. |

Team horse care allows all of our campers to have hands-on experience taking care of "their own horse". Campers work in teams to groom, tack, bathe, and care for their horse. While time in the saddle develops riding skills, the barn lesson teaches all aspects of horsemanship and caring for horses. Some of the few things that beginner campers learn about are grooming, tacking, tack care, horse bathing, and horse breeds including colors and markings. More advanced campers continue their education learning about feed, shoeing, caring for injuries, wrapping, and show prep.

Special Events
During each session, the campers will have the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors on a trail ride and will get to show their skills at a horse show, which the parents are encouraged to attend. Additionally, Fridays are fun on horseback days, during which we play our ever popular gymkhana games like musical stalls, breakin’ out, obstacle courses, and relay races. The last Friday of each session we host a pizza party. |
